Why Setting Boundaries Isn't Selfish (and How to Start)

For many people, the word "boundary" feels uncomfortable. It conjures up images of putting up walls, pushing people away, or being unkind. If you identify as a "people-pleaser," saying "no" might trigger an immediate wave of guilt.

However, in psychotherapy, we often reframe boundaries not as walls to keep people out, but as fences with gates that show people how to safely interact with you.

The Hidden Cost of No Boundaries

When you constantly say "yes" to others at the expense of your own time, energy, and mental health, it leads to:

  • Chronic emotional exhaustion and burnout.
  • Quiet resentment toward the people you love.
  • A loss of personal identity and self-worth.

Setting healthy boundaries is actually an act of love—for yourself and for your relationships. Clear boundaries prevent resentment from building up over time.

3 Steps to Set Gentle, Effective Boundaries

  1. Identify Your Limits
Pay attention to your resentment. Resentment is almost always a sign that a boundary has been crossed or needs to be set. Ask yourself: Where in my life am I giving more than I have capacity for?
  2. Keep It Simple and Clear
You don't need a lengthy explanation or an elaborate excuse to set a boundary. Directness is kindness.
    • Instead of: "I'm so sorry, I wish I could help, but I'm just so busy with X, Y, and Z..."
    • Try: "Thank you for thinking of me! I don't have the capacity to take that on right now."
  3. Expect Discomfort (and Guilt)
If you aren't used to setting boundaries, doing so will feel wrong at first. Remind yourself that feeling guilty does not mean you did something wrong. It simply means you are breaking an old habit.
